It was the start of a year-and-a-half basement finishing project, but it was well worth all of the effort. Jamin and Ashley of the home design blog The Handmade Home began by installing drywall over the cinderblock walls, applying spray foam insulation, and enclosing the necessary but ugly supporting adjustable steel posts. Next came paint, flooring, and furniture, all fusing together to make a lovely daylight basement for work and play.

To help you decide whether or not you should run out and buy the latest trending color, we have created a living room to show you how the different colors chosen by some of the biggest design brands can transform your space. Each of the images featured in our blog have the same layout and the same furniture. However, we have slightly varied some of the minor design details (such as curtains, cushions, etc.), all in the hopes of helping you see how to incorporate the 2020 colors into your living space.
While decorative concrete may cost more than some other types of flooring, its proponents point to the long life expectancy of this material. Even cracks in the floor can be considered an attractive rustic feature as long as they do not reflect structural problems. Those concerned by the slippery nature of high-gloss sealers can add a non-slip additive to sealer or stain before application.
Ambient lighting in the living room is most commonly recessed lighting because it provides the most even overall light. Accent lighting is the decorative lights you include in the design, such as lamps, pendants, and chandeliers. Task lighting is what helps you use the room, such as a desk lamp, lights that focus on shelves, or lighting around an entertainment center.
On the average, the price of installing new windows for a living room remodel run anywhere from $300 to $1500 depending on the type of material, the size, and the quantity of windows needed to complete the project. Replacing windows may also incur extra costs in terms of prep work as sometimes walls may need to be repaired before accommodating the new windows. Expect added costs for any changes in the trims and sidings both in the interior and exterior of the house. Also, factor in any added window treatments to your overall remodeling budget.
A good way to cut on costs when improving windows for living rooms is to furnish them with a window treatment. You can either buy new curtains, shades or blinds, depending on the prevailing style of your home. Window treatments are available in different types of materials and present a wide range of choices when it comes to design, colors and patterns.

Schumacher's Chenonceau paper feels both modern and old-fashioned, with a pattern reminiscent of traditional paper-cutting. A round table by Ballard Designs softens the room's right angles; Crate & Barrel's white bentwood chairs provide contrast. The old curtains were the home-decor equivalent of a dowdy skirt that hits midcalf; new floor-length, linen drapes give the room elegance.
A well-formed decoration of the house is the heartiest desire of every house maker. That’s why while designing his house, he led his focus on each and every corner. Yes, adorable designing and remodeling of the dining room will bring a majestic change in your house environment. With the tempting renovation, you can not beautify the place only but will love to spend your time with your family members as well as with your guests while enjoying the delicious, mouth-watering food. Furniture items for living rooms include three seater sofas, love seats, arm chairs, recliners, accent chairs, center or coffee table, side tables , tv cabinet, console table and shelves, to name a few. Furnishings, on the other hand, pertain to accessories and decor such as window treatments like curtains, blinds or shades, textiles and fabric, throw pillows, area rugs, accent pieces and decorations like artworks, frames, figurines, etc. While equipment for living rooms typically include flat screen TV’s, home entertainments systems, etc.
Family photographs instantly add warmth and personality to your home. Take them out of the attic, off your computer, or out of the infrequently viewed albums on your bookshelves, and enjoy them every day. Pick a wall, corner, or entire room. If your chosen spot already has picture molding (found in many older homes), your job will be easy. If not, adding new molding is not that complicated.
In older homes the formal dining room is often a separate, walled-in space. And while this helps create a more intimate space, it can also make a home feel compartmentalized and claustrophobic. Today it’s all about the open floor plan. One of the best ways to open up your home and increase your living space is to knock down the walls that separate your living and dining rooms. Note: don’t go knocking down walls yourself. Leave any structural changes to the pros.

For the obvious reasons, major renovations cost more than minor renovation in terms of both labor and materials. They require more materials to complete as compared to minor renovations. As mentioned, major renovations are also best left to the professionals due to their complex nature. As a result, they incur more labor costs. It is also best to keep in mind that when dealing with a full or major renovation for a living room remodel project, it is highly recommended that one should not skimp on skilled labor, especially when it comes to structural, ceiling, flooring and electrical works because substandard work often compromises quality and will cost you more in the long run.

If time is critical, consider a basement finishing kit. A finishing kit has insulated wall panels, and some include a walkable flooring surface and ceiling material for DIY installation. Depending on the size of your basement, these kits can be installed in a weekend. However, the floor won't be carpeted, the walls won't be painted, and there will be no electrical or plumbing. Other features such as doors, trim work, and more also need to be added.
We're really digging the alternating black and gray stained wood cabinets in this deVOL kitchen. The varied tones (plus texture) adds interest to a neutral space. The sandy beige walls keep things neutral but warms thing a little more than a crisp white or super light gray. The shearling chair cover warms up, too, and the interior window creates flow and spreads the light.
There are several ways to save on flooring costs for a living room remodel project. Ceramic floor tiles, for example, may be regrouted as long as their surfaces are still in good condition. Wooden floors that have light scratches may be re-sanded and reapplied with stain to give them a more fresh look. Natural stone floors may be rebuffed and resealed, while carpets may be industrially cleaned.  For a minimal amount, these minor improvements can instantly transform the look of your living room.
When homeowners invite guests and company into their home typically the first thing that visitors see is the living room, or family room, of the house. Unless there is a foyer before the living room, this is the room that many people greet their family members and guests. It goes without saying, of course, that the living room is one of the most important rooms in the house. When it comes time for remodeling projects the living room may also be one of the first room on some homeowner’s lists that needs to get renovated.
This homeowner bucked the “matchy, matchy” rule by placing different end tables and lamps on either side of the sofa in her living room. The mismatch works because, even though one table is a white Asian-inspired look and the other is a black step-like design, both tables are the same height. A sleek brass reading lamp pairs nicely with the simple white table, while a large silver-leaf table lamp fits with the more substantial black table.

Painting the walls, ceiling, and floors white really lightened things up, and new 8-foot-tall windows and French doors (minus view-blocking wooden blinds) bring in much more sunshine. The all-white backdrop cleared the way for a crisp and cozy color scheme of grey, black, and green. Gingham curtains and plaid pillows play up the preppy country feel.

While most light fixtures can be easily changed, adding new lighting fixtures, outlets and switches are not meant for “do it yourself” projects due to their sensitivity. Making changes to a lighting and electrical layout is only easy if the ceiling frames are exposed as there is no need to remove ceiling boards and cause additional damage to the home. But as mentioned living room renovation projects that involve electrical work may require hiring an electrician.
Even if it's currently cold concrete and crammed with boxes of off-season duds, the lowest floor of your home probably has loads of potential. Treat it just as you would any of the rooms aboveground, and it might just become the most popular spot in the house—for a lot less cash than adding on. Here's our bottom-line advice for turning this underutilized space into a place you'll be eager to spend time in.

The budget is an important consideration in living room remodels because it allows you to work within your means and prepare all needed funds before you start with the renovation. Whether you are planning a simple make over or a major overhaul for your living room, it is important to  know the factors that may affect the cost of your living room remodel project.
Apart from the standard bookcases, side tables and TV units, there are a few other handy living room storage ideas you can invest in. As mentioned before, if you have the room and budget for it, a built-in storage unit could be the way forward. With a well-built unit you could hide your TV, DVDs, players, books, video consoles and all sorts away in one place. If you don’t quite have a large enough area for one, you could look at shelving – either side of the chimney breast is a great place to install shelving if you have one in your living room. And don’t forget living room furniture such as sofas, benches and ottomans that lift up to reveal hidden storage; providing seating and storing space at the same time. With the right storage solutions your living room design could open up and feel so much more spacious and stylish.
• Ceiling – Ceiling works also take up a large part of the costs of any type of renovation project, mainly because of the extensive amount of work that they require. For living room remodel projects, minor ceiling renovation works may range from simple repainting and repair. While major ceiling renovation works range from removing old ceiling boards to replacing them with new gypsum boards to the improvement of the ceiling layout and design. In some cases, the ceiling is given a whole new look by installing recessed, drop or cove ceilings. Other options for living room ceiling finishes are textured panels, wallpaper, wood accents, creative paint treatments and other trim finishes.

A kitchen island can cost you anywhere from $200 to $6,000. Portablemodels that provide basic counter space and a little storage underneath are a couple hundred dollars, whereas having a stationary island installed will cost closer to $1,000. If you add plumbing and electricity, expect it to cost you between $3,000 and $6,000, maybe more. Adding new kitchen cabinets provides you with another diverse price range. Pre-made cabinets from the store will cost anywhere from $50 to over $200 a unit. If you want custom cabinets, depending on the materials, the size of the kitchen, and the extras (like spice racks) you may end up paying between $12,000 and $40,000
Full or Partial Renovation – Another key factor in determining a living room remodel cost is the nature of the project, whether it may be a full or partial renovation. In terms of scope of work, this is often referred to as a minor renovation or a major renovation. Minor renovation projects undergo partial improvement while a major renovation typically include a more labor intensive process.

Living room expansions require evaluation of the existing site conditions of the space, particularly the structural elements in the room such as the columns, beams and interior partitions. Be prepared to find other problems as you go like the possibility of termites, mold problems or asbestos. In some cases, there are also load bearing walls that will need additional work for support. Existing outlets, ventilation systems, plumbing and electricity may also need to be moved or relocated.

Great tips. At the onset of explaining various causes of a squeak, Tom Silva says it can be alignment, either of the door-to-hinge, or hinge-to-hinge. Hmm, seems to me those two scenarios different than the case in the vid, that being singular hinge with the barrels out of alignment. So, the vid shows a great solution to fixing out of alignment barrels, but what about fixing doors with hinges out of alignment from each other, or hinges out of alighment on the door? How do you make that determinations, and what is the solution? thx

Here we have another lovely decoration plan for the dining arrangement. This time, all the beautification of the place is possible just because of the classy architecture. You will definitely find this design best for your home. The dining arrangement of the house will provide you with a great chance to spend some great moments of life with your family.
Situated within a Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea conservation area, this unique home was most recently remodelled in the 1990s by the Manser Practice and is comprised of two perpendicular townhouses connected by an L-shaped glazed link. Initially tasked with remodelling the house’s living, dining and kitchen areas, Studio Bua oversaw a seamless extension and refurbishment of the wider property, including rear extensions to both townhouses, as well as a replacement of the glazed link between them. The design, which responds to the client’s request for a soft, modern interior that maximises available space, was led by Studio Bua’s ex-Manser Practice principal Mark Smyth. It combines a series of small-scale interventions, such as a new honed slate fireplace, with more significant structural changes, including the removal of a chimney and threading through of a new steel frame. Studio Bua, who were eager to bring new life to the space while retaining its original spirit, selected natural materials such as oak and marble to bring warmth and texture to the otherwise minimal interior. Also, rather than use a conventional aluminium system for the glazed link, the studio chose to work with specialist craftsmen to create a link in lacquered timber and glass. The scheme also includes the addition of a stylish first-floor terrace, which is linked to the refurbished living area by a large sash window and features a walk-on rooflight that brings natural light to the redesigned master suite below. In the master bedroom, a new limestone-clad bathtub and bespoke vanity unit are screened from the main bedroom by a floor-to-ceiling partition, which doubles as hanging space for an artwork. Studio Bua’s design also responds to the client’s desire to find new opportunities to display their art collection. To create the ideal setting for artist Craig-Martin’s neon pink steel sculpture, the studio transformed the boiler room roof into a raised plinth, replaced the existing rooflight with modern curtain walling and worked closely with the artist to ensure the lighting arrangement perfectly frames the artwork. Begin each day with a grateful heart. The large-lettered grateful message is painted on the smooth side of three wide wooden boards nailed together as an expression of great daily expectations. Placed handily over a single shelf with greenery and a wood-carved floral tray containing two silver and glass decanters, this sentiment is a great daily motivator.
Failure to obtain proper permits can result removing (demo-ing) any current finishing work or remodeling already installed. You could also face fines. A "stop work order" may be issued, which usually causes double the fees when you do, eventually, apply for the permit(s). If you have to file an insurance claim and can't produce any permits, the insurance company may deny the claim. Finishing a basement without permits also can affect the home's resale value.
